Family Involvement: Staying Connected

Families and other support systems can play an important role in a loved one’s treatment, recovery, and transition from Mississippi State Hospital. We welcome family involvement and encourage loved ones to stay connected in ways that support the patient’s treatment and well-being.

The treatment team can help families understand appropriate ways to participate throughout their loved one’s stay.

How Can Families Be Involved?

When appropriate and consistent with the patient’s wishes, treatment needs, and privacy requirements, families may:
  • Share information about their loved one’s history, needs, strengths, and preferences
  • Participate in treatment and care planning
  • Support their loved one’s treatment goals
  • Participate in discharge planning
  • Help identify community resources and support
  • Help prepare for their loved one’s transition from the hospital

Even when families cannot participate directly in certain aspects of treatment, their support and encouragement can be valuable to a loved one’s recovery.

Privacy and Confidentiality

MSH staff must follow applicable privacy laws and hospital policies. This means a patient must provide consent in order for Social Services to share information with family members.

Staying Connected Matters

Your encouragement, understanding, and support can make a meaningful difference. Mississippi State Hospital’s Social Services staff are available to help families understand the treatment process and identify appropriate ways to remain involved throughout their loved one’s stay.
